Maytag Repair
Please note that Whirlpool bought out Maytag in 2006.
Maytag appliance repairs are among the highest in volume of brand name service requests.
HIGHEST VOLUMES service areas are:
- Maytag washer repairs (top load models).
- Maytag frontload washer repairs.
- Maytag dryer repairs.
- Maytag refrigerator repairs.
- Maytag dishwasher repairs.
Before we get into listing the most common service issues of each of these 4 it is important to note that Whirlpool bought out Maytag in 2006. So the result is that many of the original Maytag products are no longer being manufactured and many of the products which now display the Maytag name are actually an original Whirlpool design. There are only 2 original Maytag locations still in operation out of the 14 in 2008. These 2 remaining facilities are supplying only the fridge and stove product lines.

MAYTAG WASHER OLDER STYLE TOP LOAD service issues:
Leaking water:
- Check injector tube which directs the water from the water inlet valve into the tub cover.
- Check the drain pump and centre tub bearing seals area.
- Check the drain hose and water inlet hoses, and the water inlet valve.
Not spinning:
- Check the lid switch.
- Check underneath by tipping the machine back 45 degrees to see if the drive belt is broken.
- Check to see if clothing has worked its way in between the spin tub and the outer tub making it difficult for the spin tub to move.
Not spinning the clothes dry:
- Make sure the main drive belt is not cracking of shiny smooth on the inside. The belt should be replaced at least every 10 years with normal use as the gripping power of the belt can be lost over time.
- Check for oil leaking from the transmission onto the belt. A little oil can be normal and the machine still usable for many more years unless it starts causing problems in other ways.
Not draining:
- Check to see if clothing is blocking the water flow in the hose system and especially in and close to the pump.
- Check if this model has a separate belt for just the pump. Replace the pump belt if it is broken, cracked or worn.
- Check the lid switch.

MAYTAG WASHER NEWER STYLE TOP LOAD service issues:
First off it is important to recognize that there are 2 primary model designs made by Whirlpool and sold as Maytag. One is belt drive the other is a magnetically stator drive system.
The stator drive system model has fewer parts in that there is no transmission, no clutch or brake assembly. It is very energy efficient for a top load washer and offers very large load size capacity. The trade off is less cleaning power with the wash plate replacing the full size agitator. Positive spin on the less cleaning is the added life span of clothing with the reduced thrashing about of the clothes.
Weak links in this design are found with the quality of the control board, and the main tub seal developing water leaks which then cause damage to the washer’s bearings which will then become make the machine loud during spin.
The belt drive system model (Whirlpool refers to as the “splutch” model). This model most commonly required repairs are having to replace the plastic motor pulley, the shifter, and the drive pulley or thrust bearing. The good news on this model is that many of these repairs can be done fairly easily by a basic do it your selfer with a few hand tools. Error codes are a little tricky to interpret and the procedure for diagnosis and interpretation should be gotten on line through a You tube or Google search relating to the Brand and washer type.
- Front load washers leaking can be caused by water backing up in the soap dispenser. Solution is to remove the soap dispenser by pressing on the release tab, take it apart and clean everything. Reassemble and reinstall and test machine.
- Washer not spinning or tumbling during wash but the motor can be heard running the problem is likely a broken belt accessed by removing the back panel.
- To fix a front load washing machine not spinning but the clothes do tumble another possible cause is the speed board. But because electrical parts are usually not returnable once installed you should refer this problem to a washer repair shop.
- When not draining some frontload washers have a small access panel door at the front bottom which can be flipped open. A button and debris trap filter can be removed by turning the round cylinder tubing anti-clockwise. Be ready for water to come pouring out. The trap should be cleaned. The area to the right leading to the pump impeller should be inspected and cleaned, check for bobby pins, coins and such. Reinstall the trap and use a crescent wrench or vise grips for more power if necessary when taking it out or to put back in. In other models removing the lower access panel which is secured by 3 screws at the bottom may give you access to the trap. If after the debris is removed from pump the and the pump is still not draining and you are sure there is no drain hose blockages and you feel or hear vibration at the pump which means power is being supplied to the pump then the pump is faulty and should be replaced.
- When the washer is getting noisy in spin the problem is most often the rear bearing having been damaged by water seeping through the rear tub seals. This can be verified by a quick look at the center of the rear tub shell behind the pulley after removing the rear panel. This repair is very rarely worth doing because of the high costs for replacing the parts and the time required for the repair.
In summary with the advent of different models and with changing designs and varied electronics Maytag washing machine repair has certainly become a greater challenge than it once was. Generally over all the Whirlpool and Maytag washer line can still be a very good choice. Sometimes paying more for the Maytag name is not likely to have any benefit considering they are often the same machine for a lower price with the Whirlpool name.
My personal preference is toward the standard top loader with an old school full size agitator. The exception would be for situations with higher volume use inside city limits where water consumption can be high. With 5 or 7 loads per week the water savings by going to a front load washer can be substantial over a 5 year period.
The standard main stay dryer design for the Maytag has been the design with 2 drum rollers supporting the front of the drum and 2 rollers supporting the rear. A very durable design with few weaknesses other than the all plastic blower wheel with a D shape shaft that tends to round in time causing the blower wheel to slip and lose power to properly move the air.
Most often service on these models might have been to replace an element very rarely, replace a belt after 15 years, and oil the rollers and the idlor wheel after 10 years. Sometimes a cycle or safety thermostat would malfunction.
With the more recent designs replacing lint screens, idlor wheel assemblies, elements and drum rollers can be more frequent. Added safety features mean that thermal fuses and thermal safety cut offs can create more frequent servicing being required. Having a problem with no heat or not running at all is most often just one of these fuses or cut offs.
With easy access to the details of how to do various maintenance repairs through Google and You tube there is little purpose in going into detailed step by step process of each circumstance other than to say generally speaking diagnosis and repair of dryers can be fairly straight forward with a little general online help.
Most of the diagnosis and repairs guidelines described in the Fridge Repair page will apply also to the Maytag fridge. The following is a repeat of the information specific to the bottom mount Maytag fridge.
When these models form ice on the floor of the freezer section there is a special drain kit available which was designed to solve this problem. Replacing the kit yourself without carefully removing the old drain slide plastic from the base can cause more serious problems. A very small screw driver wedged down the back side of the old drain hose will release the hose so that the plastic base water tray does not crack in the process.
If you do crack the base it’s almost impossible to replace but it can be dried and glued overnight. Once the kit has been installed the unit should be shut down for 2 days with both doors open to get rid of the ice stuck in the tube which is located below the evaporator coils. Or a turkey baster can be used to direct hot water into the tube, normally takes about 15 minutes to do this stage of the repair.
There is in fact no difference to speak of in Maytag service to the dishwashers which is beyond that information already covered in the previous article.
