Stove Repair
Winnipeg stove repairs are among the smallest in volume of service requests that we receive.
STOVE REPAIR service requests we receive most are:
- Oven not heating.
- Oven temperature troubles.
- Surface element not working.
- Surface element too hot on low heat setting.
- Bake element not working.
- Broil element not working.
SOLUTIONS to when the oven not heating most common causes are:
- Inspect the bake element, if it is physically and visibly broken or cracked, replace the element. If the element looks fine inside the element may still be burnt. Test the element by taking an ohms reading. The reading should be around 8 to 15 ohms. If no reading is showing replace the element.
- If the stove is newer with an electronic oven control (you have a digital display for time and temperature) you can test the oven sensor. To do this you can disconnect the sensor where it is attached to the back of the electronic control, take an ohms reading should be between 1000 and 1100 ohms. If not replace the sensor.
- If the sensor tests okay and both the bake and broil element test okay, the most likely part to replace is the electronic oven control, the EOC.
SOLUTIONS to oven temperature problems most common causes are:
- Bake element may be shot, and only the broil element is giving some heat by helping with the preheat. Test the bake element. If bake element is okay on the EOC style oven test the oven sensor detailed in 2. above.
- With non EOC type older range with oven thermostat that is not digital some can be adjusted if the temperature is only out by say 25 degrees F. There is often a very small set screw down inside the middle of the oven control shaft. Try turning the set screw a one half rotation either direction to see how it responds. Then adjust accordingly.
- If adjusting is not possible often times a universal oven control kit can be installed, should likely be done by a service technician.
- Many newer digital style oven controls can also be adjusted or calibrated if off between 10 or 30 degrees F. To do this we recommend finding a you tube video that corresponds to your brand or model. Or if you can find the technical data sheet that comes with your range the steps will also be explained on the data sheet.
SOLUTIONS to surface element not working most common causes are:
- The surface element itself is shot. Test with your meter. If you have no meter you can take the element that is not working and plug it into a different location to see if it works there.
- The terminal block which the element is plugged into is faulty. Usually when a terminal block is damaged you can inspect inside and around and see some evidence of damage. Look closely at the terminal ends of the element where the connection was made inside the terminal block. If the tips of the element are pitted or badly discolored then both the element and the terminal block should be replaced.
- If the element and the terminal block are good then the surface element switch is likely faulty and not allowing 220 volts to go to the element. You can live test the switch to see if you get a 220 volt reading at the 2 terminals where the wiring from the terminal block are attached. If no 220 is coming through the switch then switch should be replaced. A word of caution if you are not familiar with basic safety guidelines when working with electricity please do not test anything live.
SOLUTIONS to when the surface element is too hot:
- If your working with a glass to range then it is going to be either a sensor which is faulty or the surface element switch.
- If you range is not a glass top then just replace the surface element switch, it is really the only probable cause.
SOLUTIONS to when the bake or broil element is not working, most common causes are:
- Test the element, no ohms reading then replace the part.
- If the element is good check for a safety thermostat which may not be allowing power to the element.
- If power is not coming to the element and there is power getting to the EOC then the EOC should be replaced.
