Washing Machine Repair
Washer repair is the highest volume service request we receive.
PROBLEMS with washing machine service requests we receive most are:
- Washer not spinning.
- Washer not draining.
- Washing machine leaking.
- Front load washer problems unique to front load design.
SOLUTIONS to when a washing machine won’t drain the most common causes are:
- Something stuck in the pump or the drain hose. Solution is to extract water from machine or clamp hoses, and remove obstruction.
- Pump failure. Solution is to drain water or clamp hoses, and replace the pump.
- Another cause when washer won’t drain is no power to the pump. This is less common but when it happens you will should likely call a washer repair shop.
SOLUTIONS to when a washer won’t spin the most common causes are:
- Water has not drained properly. (Refer above to Solutions to when a machine won’t drain)
- Door latch assembly or lid switch is faulty. Solution is to test and or replace the switch. For more information on not spinning issues on frontload washer see the special section covering in more detail below.
SOLUTIONS to repair washing machine leaking water most common causes are:
- The pump is leaking. Solution is to inspect closely the pump for cracking or evidence of water leaking and replace the pump.
- Drain hoses and fill hoses should be inspected and replaced if any sign of water leaking is found.
- Water inlet valves can also crack or remain open when power is off, causing the machine to continue filling. If this happens, shut off the water supply taps, and replace the water inlet valves.
- Another occasional cause of making a washer appear to be leaking is when overflowing occurs when the drain pipe is the real source. In this case it is common to blame the washer when the real problem is a blockage developing in your home drainage system which is causing the standpipe that your drain hose sits in to overflow at times. If you suspect it may be happening but are having trouble catching it actually happening you can secure some toilet paper or paper towel at the top of the standpipe and then check from time to time to see if it is soggy or wrinkled looking from having been wet. If the problem is with the standpipe you will need to call a company that provides home drain plumbing services.
SOLUTIONS
On frontload washers leaking can be caused by water backing up in the soap dispenser. Solution is to remove the soap dispenser by pressing on the release tab, take it apart and clean everything. Reassemble and reinstall and test machine. Also on the frontload washer leaking the front door seal (known as a door bellows or boot) is often the source of leaking found at the front door. This type of repair should usually be taken care of by an experienced service technician.
To fix a frontload washing machine not spinning but the clothes do tumble another possible cause is the speed board. But because electrical parts are usually not returnable once installed you should refer this problem to a washer repair shop.
Washer not spinning or tumbling during wash but the motor can be heard running the problem is likely a broken belt accessed by removing the back panel.
With a front load washing machine that only spins slowly during spin cycle another possible causes is the door latch assembly. Usually requires partial disconnecting of door bellows and can be challenging without the right tools or procedure.
When not draining some frontload washers have small access panel door at the front bottom which can be flipped open. A button and debris trap filter can be removed by turning the round cylinder tubing anti-clockwise. Be ready for water to come pouring out. The trap should be cleaned. The area to the right leading to the pump impeller should be inspected and cleaned, check for bobby pins, coins and such. Reinstall the trap and use a crescent wrench or vise grips for more power if necessary when taking it out or to put back in. In other models removing the lower access panel which is secured by 3 screws at the bottom may give you access to the trap. If after the debris is removed from pump the and the pump is still not draining and you are sure there is no drain hose blockages and you feel or hear vibration at the pump which means power is being supplied to the pump then the pump is faulty and should be replaced.
When the washer is getting noisy in spin the problem is most often the rear bearing having been damaged by water seeping through the rear tub seals. This can be verified by a quick look at the center of the rear tub shell behind the pulley after removing the rear panel. This repair is very rarely worth doing because of the high costs for replacing the parts and the time required for the repair.
In conclusion washing machine repair problems can also be among the most challenging to diagnose while also often being made more difficult with protecting the home from water damage or smelly water. In order to repair washer problems any water which remains in the machine also makes the machine almost twice as heavy and more time consuming to repair. If you as a customer are able to do it, it is usually a good idea to bail as much water from the machine as possible. This will help to reduce the service time charge. Also adding a little bleach, even just 3 tablespoons will help to keep the water from going bad and making the final disposal of the water less unpleasant.
